Pill is a small village on the south bank of the River Avon that most people drive through without registering as somewhere distinct. It sits off the A369 on the way to Portishead, technically in North Somerset, about 15 minutes from our depot. For a lot of people, Pill is under the radar — but it's a village that may be on the verge of significant change if the proposed rail link to Bristol Temple Meads goes ahead.
We do a steady number of moves in and out of Pill. It shares the BS20 postcode with neighbouring Portishead, and many residents move between the two — upsizing to Portishead's larger housing stock or downsizing from Portishead to a more compact Pill cottage. The village sits on the cycle route between Portishead and Bristol — a route Jay uses himself — running along the river under the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
What Makes Moving in Pill Different?
Narrow Roads and Gradients
Pill's character comes from its history as a small port and ferry crossing point on the Avon. The older part of the village — compact terraces and stone cottages built for dock workers — wasn't designed with removal logistics in mind. Narrow roads wind uphill through the village core, and the gradients and road angles are the main operational consideration. Nothing impassable for a Luton van, but a site visit is worth doing specifically to work out where the van goes.
For moves from the older village core, we typically bring a smaller transit for the initial load and transfer contents to the Luton at a wider staging point. It adds a few minutes but protects both your belongings and your neighbours' parked cars. The newer estates off Lodway and towards the Portishead end are a different story — wider roads, driveways, standard access.
A Mix of Old and New
The housing ranges from older terraces and cottages near the harbour — compact, occasionally with limited internal access — to some flats in the centre, and modern new-builds at the top of the hill with driveways and garages. Most moves here are two-storey properties, comfortably finished in a day. Pill is too small to support a dedicated removal company, so you're looking at Bristol-based operators regardless — and at 7 miles, we're the closest full-service option.
The Railway Question
There's a proposed rail link that would connect Pill to Bristol Temple Meads. If it happens, property values would shift — as Jay puts it, they "would not be what they are now." It's speculative, but it's the kind of thing that shapes whether people buy now or wait. From a removals perspective, more people moving in means more work — and we know Pill's lanes well enough to handle it.
★★★★★“Wonderful guys, incredibly helpful and kept a positive attitude even after a long day. Highly recommended!”

Pill is a 10-to-15-minute drive from our depot in light traffic, longer during commuter windows on the A369. The cycle path along the river — under the Suspension Bridge, through to Bristol — gets properly muddy in winter, but the road access to the village is reliable year-round.
"Pill is right on the cycle route from Portishead into Bristol — I cycle it myself. The village is small but we know the lanes well. It's a quick hop from our depot and we're there comfortably." — Jay Newton, Director
Pill falls under North Somerset Council, not Bristol. If you're combining your move with a house clearance, waste collection rules differ. Let Painless Removals handle the logistics — we work across both council areas every week.
Is Pill a Difficult Place to Move?
The newer estates: no. Good road widths, driveways, easy access. The older village core: it needs planning. The narrow roads, gradients, and limited parking mean van positioning matters. But we've done it many times and know which approaches work.
For long-distance moves from Pill, M5 J19 is 2 miles away. Whether you're heading to London via the M4 or north on the M5, you're on the motorway within minutes.
Planning Your Pill Move: A Quick Checklist
- Old village or new estate? This determines van size, routing, and whether we shuttle.
- Gradient? Pill's roads climb steeply — check that the van can park level for safe loading.
- Parking? Older streets have limited space — let us know if neighbours' cars may block access.
- Portishead move? Pill to Portishead is about 2 miles — one of the shortest moves we do.
