Removals Bristol to Southampton — 80 Miles, One Day
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
It's not a route people talk about much, but for the right move it's a clean one. Bristol to Southampton is around 75 miles — about one hour and forty minutes to two hours depending on which way you go. The M4 east to the M3 south is the faster motorway option. The A36 through Warminster and Salisbury is quieter, scenic, and sometimes quicker when the motorways are backed up. For smaller moves, a single day covers loading, driving, and unloading. Larger properties with more to pack and carry may need two days.
Southampton's housing varies widely: waterfront apartment developments along Ocean Village and the marina with long carries from the van to the front door, Victorian terraces in St Denys and Portswood, suburban family homes in Bassett and Hedge End, and student lets around Highfield near the university. Each type of property presents different access requirements — and we plan for all of them before move day.
What Makes a Bristol to Southampton Move Different?
The Route South
You have two realistic options. The M4 eastbound picking up the M3 south is the default — mostly motorway, predictable timing, and the route sat-navs prefer. The alternative is the A36 through Warminster and Salisbury, which avoids the motorway network entirely. On a clear day there is little difference in journey time. When the M4 around Swindon or the M3 near Winchester is carrying heavy traffic, the A36 can be faster.
The M27 around Southampton backs up during rush hour — particularly the stretch between junctions 3 and 8 during the evening commute. We schedule arrivals to avoid this window. A midweek move with a mid-morning departure from Bristol puts us into Southampton before the afternoon build-up starts.
Southampton's Neighbourhoods
Bassett and Highfield sit on higher ground north of the city centre — wider residential streets and driveways that give the van easy access. Bitterne and Hedge End to the east are similar: suburban estates with room to park and work. The waterfront developments along Ocean Village and the marina are a different proposition. Underground car parks, narrow service corridors, pre-booked goods lifts, and longer carries from loading bay to apartment. We assess every waterfront delivery individually.
St Denys and Portswood have a mix of Victorian terraces and converted flats, many on streets with permit parking. Shirley, to the west of the centre, offers a range of housing from pre-war semis to modern developments. If your new property is in a restricted parking area, we handle the council suspension paperwork.
The Port and Student Calendar
Southampton is a major port city, and we occasionally handle moves involving items going in or out of the docks — delivering household goods to the port for international shipping, or collecting from the port for new arrivals. The university population around Highfield also creates a predictable September surge in moving activity. If your move falls in late September, booking early gives you a better choice of dates. The student traffic affects van availability across the whole city, not just the university area.
★★★★★“We moved from Bristol to Southampton and Painless Removals did a really great job. They worked very hard and were careful with our belongings. They wouldn't leave until we were happy that our furniture had been reassembled and put in the right place.”

Painless Removals has handled Bristol-to-Southampton moves for professionals relocating to the maritime and defence industries, families moving closer to the south coast, and port workers transferring between cities. The route works in both directions — Southampton-to-Bristol moves tend to involve people joining the creative and tech sectors. We know the access requirements at both ends and plan accordingly.
"Southampton is about two hours from Bristol — a similar drive time to parts of Devon. For smaller moves, a single day is achievable; for larger properties with more to move, we split across two days. It's not one of our highest-volume routes, but the principles are the same — we plan properly and price honestly." — Jay Newton, Director
If your completion dates don't align, we offer flexible storage at our Bristol depot until your new place is ready. Weekly or monthly terms, with collection and delivery included.
What Does a Bristol to Southampton Move Cost?
A one- or two-bed flat with a single van typically costs £700–£900. A standard family home runs £1,200–£1,800. Waterfront apartments with access complications — goods lift bookings, loading bay reservations, longer carries — sit at the higher end of that range. Our packing service adds to the cost but splits the work across two days and protects fragile items for the journey.
Every quote includes £15,000 insurance cover per van, all fuel, crew, and equipment. No hidden charges for mileage or parking suspension handling. What we quote is what you pay.
