Removals Bristol to Oxford — 75 Miles, One Day
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
Bristol to Oxford is about 75 miles — an hour and a half on a good run via the M4 and A34. It is one of the more relaxed long drives we do. No motorway tolls, no congestion-charge zones on the approach, and the A34 moves well outside rush hour. For most households, a single van and a two- or three-person crew will load in the morning, drive across, and have everything unloaded by late afternoon.
Oxford's character changes block by block. Jericho's narrow Victorian terraces need careful vehicle positioning. Headington and Cowley have wider residential streets with on-street parking to manage. Summertown and North Oxford offer more generous driveways. And the medieval city centre — around the colleges and the High Street — has restricted vehicle access that requires advance planning and specific time windows. We assess every Oxford delivery individually.
What Makes a Bristol to Oxford Move Different?
The M4/A34 Corridor
The route is clean: M4 east from Bristol, then the A34 north from the Newbury area into Oxford. The M4 section is motorway all the way — predictable, well-maintained, and rarely a problem. The A34 is dual carriageway for most of the stretch, though it can slow down around the Abingdon and Botley interchange during peak hours. Occasional incidents on the A34 do cause delays, but nothing like the congestion you get on the M5 corridor heading north.
We schedule departures to arrive in Oxford outside the morning commute window. A midweek move avoids the worst of the A34 traffic — and Oxford's own internal congestion from university buses and cyclists is lighter outside term time.
Oxford's Neighbourhoods
Oxford's residential areas each have their own access considerations. Jericho — popular with academics and young professionals — is a grid of tight Victorian streets where a large removal van needs careful placement. Iffley, south of the centre, has a mix of period houses and modern estates with better access. Headington sits on the eastern edge with hospital-adjacent streets that can be busy during shift changes. Cowley Road is lively and congested in its commercial stretch but opens up into quieter residential roads further out.
Summertown and North Oxford tend to be the easiest — larger properties, wider roads, and more predictable parking. Further out, Abingdon and Kidlington are well-connected via the A34 and have fewer access restrictions. We plan each delivery based on the specific street, not just the postcode.
The Academic Calendar
Bristol to Oxford tends to be academic jobs — research positions, lecturers, people following the universities. Oxford to Bristol is often people who have had enough of Oxford prices and want a city with more edge and better music. Either way, the academic calendar shapes when people move. Start of Michaelmas term in October and the end of Trinity term in June are the busy periods. If you can move outside those windows, Oxford is quieter and parking is easier to arrange.
★★★★★“Great experience! Jeremiah and George were excellent — very helpful across a complicated move involving multiple houses and stops.”

Oxford is also famously flat, which is a pleasant change for removal work after Bristol's hills. No steep carries, no awkward gradients on front paths — the crew notices the difference. After Bristol, where you are always aware of the topography, Oxford feels refreshingly level. The wider Oxford area is easy to work in: good road access, space for vans, and none of the terrain challenges that Bristol presents on a daily basis.
"Oxford is about an hour and a bit from Bristol. Beautiful city. It's flat — a welcome change from Bristol's hills for the lads. The wider Oxford area is easy to work in. Pricing starts around seven hundred to nine hundred for a single van, twelve hundred to eighteen hundred for a family home." — Jay Newton, Director
