Removals Bristol to Devon — One‑Day & Two‑Day Moves
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
The gap between a Bristol terrace and a Devon farmhouse, a Redland semi and a house on the edge of Dartmoor, is more than distance. Devon sits 80 to 180 miles south-west via the M5 — anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours depending on whether you're heading for Exeter or the far side of Barnstaple. For most moves, that's a comfortable single day. For larger homes or properties with access complications, we split the work across two.
Devon has more access variety per square mile than almost anywhere we work. South Devon coast towns like Dartmouth, Salcombe, and Kingsbridge sit at the end of B-roads with passing places. North Devon — Barnstaple, Bideford, Croyde — relies on the A361 single carriageway, which slows to a crawl in summer. Dartmoor properties come with extraordinary approach roads. Each destination needs its own plan, and the video walkthrough we carry out before every move specifically examines the Devon end: approach road width, van parking, low bridges, and turning space.
What Makes a Bristol to Devon Move Different?
The M5 Calendar
The M5 southbound is the only practical route into Devon from Bristol, and it carries every car, caravan, and campervan heading for the south-west coast. During school holidays and bank holiday weekends, the stretch between Taunton and Exeter can add well over an hour to the drive. A summer Friday is the worst — the motorway fills from mid-morning and stays congested into the evening.
Midweek in term time is a different road entirely — faster, cheaper, and calmer. We always flag this when you book. A one-day shift from Friday to Wednesday can save you real time and keep the cost down. The day you choose affects the entire move.
Devon's Access Variety
The motorway section of the journey is the easy part. Once you leave the M5, Devon's road network demands attention. Exeter and the A38 corridor to Newton Abbot are well-served dual carriageway. Beyond that, things narrow quickly. The lanes leading to coastal villages and moorland properties are where the real planning happens — hedge-lined single-track roads, sharp bends, and farm traffic.
We assess every Devon delivery address on satellite imagery and, where necessary, send someone to check the approach in person. For properties where a large vehicle can't reach the front door, we plan a shuttle — transferring your belongings into a smaller van for the final stretch. It takes longer, but it protects your furniture and the property.
North Devon vs South Devon
The two halves of the county are quite different journeys. South Devon — Torquay, Paignton, Totnes, and the coast beyond — is reached via the A38 after Exeter and tends to be quicker. North Devon — Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe — follows the A361 North Devon Link Road, a single carriageway that can be slow behind caravans and agricultural vehicles. We factor in extra time for North Devon runs and, for larger moves, may start the loading earlier to compensate.
★★★★★“The lads worked hard — very friendly and respectful. They were careful with everything. We'd definitely recommend them.”

Painless Removals runs the Bristol to Devon corridor regularly — it's one of our most popular routes in both directions. Professionals relocating from Exeter to Bristol for work, Bristol families moving to Devon for space and lifestyle. The pattern is consistent: load in Bristol in the morning, drive south, unload in Devon by late afternoon. For most homes, one day is enough.
"Devon is meaningfully closer than Cornwall, which changes the economics. For smaller and medium-sized moves, one day is usually achievable. For larger moves we still split across two days — but unlike Cornwall, we rarely need to overnight the team. The typical pattern is: load in Bristol, drive to Devon, unload, and return the same day. It keeps costs down compared to moves that require hotel accommodation." — Jay Newton, Director
If your completion dates don't align, we offer flexible storage at our Bristol depot until your new place is ready. We also handle the return trip — Devon to Bristol moves follow the same M5 corridor and benefit from the same planning.
What Does a Bristol to Devon Move Cost?
A single-van move to the Exeter area typically costs £700–£900. A standard family home — three or four bedrooms, two to three van loads — runs £1,200–£1,800 depending on volume, destination within Devon, and access at the delivery end. Remote properties requiring a shuttle transfer sit at the higher end. Our packing service adds to the cost but keeps everything protected and splits the work across two days.
Every quote includes £15,000 insurance cover per van, all fuel, crew, and equipment. No hidden charges for mileage, access complications, or shuttle transfers. What we quote is what you pay.
Planning Your Bristol to Devon Move
- Avoid school holidays. The M5 southbound carries all south-west holiday traffic. Midweek in term time is consistently faster and cheaper.
- Check your Devon access. Narrow lanes, low bridges, and limited turning space are common — we assess every address before move day.
- North Devon? Allow extra time. The A361 single carriageway is slower than the A38 south. We adjust the schedule accordingly.
- Book 3–4 weeks ahead. Summer months fill quickly on this route, particularly for North Devon and coastal destinations.
- Professional packing? We pack the day before at your Bristol address, then move everything the following morning.
