Removals Bristol to Cornwall — Two‑Day Moves
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
Cornwall is one of our favourite destinations. It's also one of the routes that separates the removal companies who know what they're doing from those who don't. Bristol to Cornwall is 200–300 miles depending on where in the county you're heading — about three and a half hours to Penzance on a good day, closer to five if you're unlucky with the A30 or hit holiday traffic. For all but the smallest moves, this is a two-day job.
We've done the drive to Cornwall in three and a half hours. We've also done it in six. The difference comes down to the day of the week, the time of year, and how far past Truro your new home sits. Once you leave the A30 and drop onto the B-roads — stone walls close enough to brush the wing mirrors of a Luton van, single-track lanes with passing places — the last few miles can take as long as the first hundred. We've made a 15-point turn on a slope to get a van within 100 metres of a front door. That's Cornwall.
What Makes a Bristol to Cornwall Move Different?
The Timing Factor
Holiday traffic is the single biggest factor on this route. The M5 south of Bristol and the A30 beyond Exeter carry enormous volumes of tourist traffic during school holidays and bank holidays. An August bank holiday Friday can turn a three-and-a-half-hour drive into five or six hours. The Tamar Bridge crossing into Cornwall is a well-known bottleneck — two lanes of traffic funnelling across the river, and once it backs up there's no alternative.
We apply a Friday surcharge to Cornwall moves as standard — not just for the drive down, but because the return journey can get caught in outbound holiday traffic even if we leave at midday. Midweek moves outside school holidays are consistently faster, cheaper, and calmer. The day you choose affects the entire experience.
Cornwall's Lanes
The A30 narrows beyond Truro. B-roads with stone walls leave very little clearance on each side of a Luton van. Single-track lanes with passing places are common, and if you meet a tractor or another large vehicle, someone's reversing. Our Luton fleet handles Cornish lanes well — they're the right balance of capacity and manoeuvrability. For high-volume moves, we discuss the 7.5-tonne option at survey, but only if the main road network reaches your property. If not, we run multiple Luton loads.
We cover the full county: Saltash, Truro, Penzance, St Ives, Falmouth, Newquay, and Bodmin. Each location has its own access quirks — narrow harbour-side streets in Falmouth, steep hills into St Ives, limited turning space in rural hamlets near Bodmin Moor. We assess all of this during your pre-move survey.
London to Cornwall via Bristol
Bristol sits on the route from London to Cornwall, and we use this to your advantage. Day one: we load in London and return to our Bristol depot overnight. Day two: we drive to Cornwall and unload. This avoids hotel costs for the crew, keeps the vehicles at our base between legs, and means everything is managed from our home turf. It's a reliable two-day structure that works well for families relocating from the south-east.

Painless Removals has run the Cornwall route enough times to know what catches people out. The drive itself is the easy part — it's the combination of timing, access, and lane width that makes or breaks the day. We plan every Cornwall move around the calendar, the specific destination, and the vehicle configuration that will actually fit down your lane.
"We apply a Friday surcharge to Cornwall moves as standard — not just for the drive down, but because the return journey can get caught in outbound holiday traffic even if we leave at midday. If you're moving to a town centre like St Ives during a busy period, it's not just inconvenient — it can make the job significantly harder. Our strong advice: move the week before or the week after the holiday starts. You'll save money, save time, and have a much calmer day." — Jay Newton, Director
This route runs in both directions. Cornwall residents relocating to Bristol for work or family, and Bristol families making the move to the coast. If your completion dates don't align, we offer flexible storage at our Bristol depot until your new place is ready.
What Does a Bristol to Cornwall Move Cost?
A smaller property with a single van typically costs from £1,000. A standard family home with two to three van loads runs £1,500–£2,500. Moves to remote locations with difficult access — narrow lanes, long carries from the nearest parking spot — sit at the higher end. Our packing service adds to the cost but splits the work across two days and protects your belongings for the longer journey.
Every quote includes £15,000 insurance cover per van, all fuel, crew, and equipment. No hidden charges for mileage or Friday surcharges beyond what's quoted. What we quote is what you pay.
Planning Your Bristol to Cornwall Move
- Avoid school holidays. The M5 and A30 carry heavy tourist traffic from late July through August. A midweek move outside these periods is faster and cheaper.
- Check your lane width. If you're moving to a rural property, measure the access route. Send us photos or a dropped pin — we'll confirm which vehicle fits.
- Book 4–6 weeks ahead. Cornwall's two-day schedule means limited slots, especially in summer. Earlier booking gives you better date options.
- Professional packing? We pack the day before at your Bristol address, then load and drive the following morning. For Cornwall, this is especially worthwhile — items are better protected for the longer journey.
- London to Cornwall? Bristol is on the route. We load London day one, drive Cornwall day two. No hotel costs, no detours.
