Removals Bristol to Cardiff
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
Bristol to Cardiff is one of our most competitive routes — about 40 to 50 minutes from our Bristol base, which puts it closer than some parts of south Bristol at rush hour. Since the Severn Bridge toll was abolished in December 2018 the crossing costs nothing in either direction, and we can price a Cardiff move comparably to many Bristol-area jobs. We've built repeat business in the city — customers who moved to Cardiff with us and then asked us to come back for a further move within Cardiff.
Cardiff's housing stock throws up its own challenges. Bay area apartments need lift bookings and loading-bay reservations. The Victorian terraces in Pontcanna and Canton have narrow hallways and on-street parking. Student areas in Cathays mean tight turnarounds and shared access. We know these neighbourhoods because we work in them week after week.
What Makes a Bristol to Cardiff Move Different?
The Severn Crossing
The M4 corridor between Bristol and Cardiff is motorway nearly the entire way. No single-carriageway bottlenecks, no mountain passes. We load at your Bristol address in the morning and you're unpacking in Cardiff by the afternoon. For larger properties we bring a second van and stagger the loads.
The crossing can back up during holiday periods — the Friday before August bank holiday, when half of Bristol appears to be driving into Wales for the weekend, is a notable example. It's not chronic in the way some routes are, and midweek moves outside school holidays are a non-issue. But it's worth factoring into your date choice.
Cardiff's Neighbourhoods
Pontcanna and Canton on the west side are popular, leafy, and lined with Victorian terrace stock — similar character to Bishopston or Redland in Bristol. Roath and Penylan to the east have similar Victorian and Edwardian housing with good access on most streets. Whitchurch and Rhiwbina to the north have more detached housing, quieter roads, and fewer access complications.
Cardiff Bay is the one that needs planning. The redeveloped docklands area has impressive modern apartments, but they come with the same access considerations you'd find in Bristol's harbour developments: goods lift bookings, restricted move-in hours, and loading bay coordination. Penarth — technically Vale of Glamorgan but functionally Cardiff's commuter belt — is coastal and pleasant, with some access considerations on the steeper residential streets.
Cross-Border Differences
One thing that catches people out is the cross-border difference in council services. Welsh council tax bands are calculated differently. Waste collection rules vary between Cardiff Council and Bristol City Council. Road signage switches to bilingual Welsh-English once you cross the bridge. None of this affects your move day, but it's worth knowing as you settle in.
Cardiff City Council has been developing a Clean Air Zone for the city centre — requirements have evolved over time and we stay current on compliance. Our fleet meets the latest emissions standards, so this is handled for you.
★★★★★“Efficient, friendly, helpful, reasonable in price. They moved all my possessions and lots of furniture from Bristol to Haverfordwest with the minimum of fuss. I rate them extremely highly.”

Cardiff is one of the routes where the numbers work in your favour. The proximity, the toll-free crossing, and the motorway run mean we can offer pricing that competes with local Cardiff removal companies — while bringing 47 years of experience from Bristol. We've had repeat customers on this route specifically: people who moved to Cardiff, settled in, and then called us back a year or two later for another move within the city.
"Cardiff is closer to us than some parts of south Bristol — it's about 40 to 50 minutes, straight down the motorway. We can price it competitively because of that. We've had customers who moved to Cardiff with us, settled in, and then called us back a couple of years later for another move within the city. That's the kind of repeat business you only get when the first job goes well." — Jay Newton, Director
Painless Removals has been running cross-border moves since 1978. Beyond Cardiff, we also cover the route to Exeter and wider Devon along the M5 corridor.
What Does a Bristol to Cardiff Move Cost?
A single-van move — smaller flat, 1–2 van loads — typically falls between £600 and £800. A family-sized move with 2–3 van loads runs £900 to £1,400 depending on volume, access difficulty, and whether you add our professional packing service. Cardiff city centre and Bay properties with access complexity sit at the higher end.
Every move includes £15,000 goods-in-transit insurance, professional blanket wrapping, and a dedicated crew for the full day. No hidden fuel surcharges, no bridge fees. The cost is driven almost entirely by volume and access rather than by the distance.
Planning Your Bristol to Cardiff Move
- Which neighbourhood? Pontcanna terraces and Cardiff Bay apartments are different jobs — crew size, equipment, and timing all change.
- Cardiff Bay access? If you're moving to or from a Bay apartment, check lift booking requirements and loading bay availability with the management company before your move date.
- Avoid bank holiday weekends. The Severn crossing backs up on Friday afternoons before bank holidays. Midweek is reliably calmer.
- Packing service? We pack the day before and move the next day. Popular for cross-border moves where you want minimal disruption across two days.
- London to Cardiff? We also handle London-to-Cardiff moves using Bristol as the staging point — a clean two-day structure with no overnight stays.
