Chepstow sits right on the border between England and Wales — technically Wales, with the River Wye marking the line. It's a town with a lot going for it: a spectacular castle perched above the river, beautiful countryside around it, the Wye Valley on the doorstep, and a location that gives you access to both Bristol and Cardiff without being swallowed by either.
We do a good number of moves to and from Chepstow. It's close enough to Bristol — around 25 minutes up the M48, no toll since December 2018 — that it sits comfortably within our regular range. The people moving here tend to be making a deliberate lifestyle decision rather than ending up somewhere by default.
What Makes Moving in Chepstow Different?
Two Different Chepstows
This is the thing about Chepstow that matters most for removals: the town centre and the surrounding areas are two completely different propositions.
The town centre — around the castle, down toward the river, the old streets that grew up inside what was once a walled medieval town — is tight. The streets are narrow, they turn sharply, they weren't designed with anything wider than a cart in mind and they haven't significantly changed since. If you're moving into a property in the old centre, access needs to be properly assessed before the day. We're talking Luton vans only, careful routing to approach from the right direction, and a conversation in advance about where the van sits while we work.
The areas outside the centre are a different story. Come across the bridge, bear right at the roundabout, and within a few minutes you're into modern residential streets with good road widths, proper drives, easy access. These moves run efficiently — no drama, no complicated manoeuvring.
The Castle End of Town
If your property is anywhere near the castle, up toward Bridge Street, or in the older streets that run back from the river, call us before you assume anything about access. The streets can be extremely narrow — not tight-feeling but restrictive. There are corners where you're threading a Luton through with not much room either side, and parked cars throughout the day add to the complexity.
Blocking the road while you unload is less of an option than on a quiet residential street. Chepstow is a market town with through traffic and you can't occupy a narrow street indefinitely. Loading and unloading needs to be efficient, and ideally you've sorted out reserved space in advance. None of this is insurmountable — we've done it plenty of times — but it requires planning, not improvisation.
The M48 and Getting Here
From Bristol, Chepstow is easy. The M48 takes you over the old Severn Bridge — the elegant suspension one — and you're there. The bridge tolls were abolished in December 2018, so there's no queue to factor in. For a direct Bristol to Chepstow move, you're looking at a comfortable one-day job for most household sizes.
