Filton is the aerospace capital of the West of England, and it is in the middle of the biggest transformation in its history. The former airfield where Concorde was built is now becoming Brabazon — a 380-acre development bringing 6,500 new homes alongside Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and MOD Abbey Wood. Painless Removals moves people into and out of Filton every week from our Southmead Road depot, about two miles south on the A38 — from established 1930s semis in Filton Park to brand-new four-beds on the Brabazon streets named after aviation pioneers.
Logistically, Filton sits in Bristol's northern corridor alongside Patchway — an area of modern and interwar housing where the infrastructure works in our favour. No Residents' Parking Zone. The A38 dual carriageway connects directly to our depot and the M5 motorway. The terrain is flat, the roads are wide, and most properties are two-storey with standard staircase widths. The only complications are A38 rush-hour congestion and the ongoing construction traffic around the Brabazon development. We know which phases of Brabazon are complete, which approach roads are clear, and which shortcuts avoid the A38 bottleneck at Filton roundabout.
What Makes Moving in Filton Different?
The Brabazon Development
Thousands of homes are being built on the former Filton Airfield, and the development will continue through the late 2020s. If you're moving into a Brabazon property, the streets are modern — wide roads, driveways, straight staircases, and doorways designed for contemporary furniture. Access is excellent. The complication is construction traffic: heavy vehicles using the same approach roads, temporary diversions, and phases that aren't yet connected. We check the current state of the site before every Brabazon move and plan the route accordingly.
The Brabazon project is one of the biggest housing developments in the region. When it's complete, it will add thousands of new homes, a new arena, and significant commercial space. What that means for anyone moving into the area in the next few years is that the neighbourhood is changing — new roads, new junctions, new building sites that will become new streets with new access considerations. We keep pace with the development so our crews aren't guessing on the day.
New-build moves need extra care in different places than older properties — it's the floors and freshly painted walls rather than the banisters and doorframes. Our crew arrives with protective materials for new flooring and brings the same discipline to protecting a £30,000 kitchen as they would to wrapping antique furniture.
★★★★★“They're not kidding with the name — our move was absolutely painless! Such an efficient, friendly and professional crew. Not a single item damaged and they were done by 2pm!”
Filton Park and the Established Streets
The 1930s semis around Shield Road and Northville Road are the desirable family streets — wider than Victorian terraces, with front gardens and driveways. Some of the pre-WWI houses have larger footprints and generous gardens but tighter side access that can limit where we position the van. A standard 3-bed semi in Filton Park is a half-day move with a two or three-person crew.
The typical Filton Park move involves a property with sensible hallways, stairs that don't require a geometry degree to navigate with a sofa, and enough room that you can get a wardrobe upstairs without dismantling it. These are settled, predictable streets — the kind of property where what you see is broadly what you get, and that makes for a cleaner quote and fewer surprises on the day.
Filton connects directly to Horfield to the south — it's suburban, the road access is good, and it's part of that northern A38 corridor where we rarely have access problems. UWE's campus and South Gloucestershire & Stroud College add a younger population to the mix, though student properties are concentrated in specific streets.

Relocation moves are a significant part of our Filton work. Airbus designs and manufactures aircraft wings here. Rolls-Royce runs aero-engine production over the boundary in Patchway. MOD Abbey Wood — the Ministry of Defence's procurement headquarters — employs thousands. BAE Systems and GKN are also present. All of these employers bring professionals relocating from elsewhere in the UK, often on fixed corporate timelines. We handle the full logistics: packing the day before, loading and driving on the agreed day, and unpacking at the new Filton home. If your employer has a relocation coordinator, we work directly with them.
The area grew up in the orbit of the Filton Airfield and the aerospace facilities nearby. For decades, this was where engineers, technicians, and aerospace workers settled their families. That industrial base has shifted — the airfield closed in 2012, and much of the site is now the Brabazon development — but the employers remain, and the relocation pipeline continues year-round.
Motorway Access: A Practical Advantage
One of the things that makes Filton work well for long-distance moves is the motorway access. You're close to Junction 16 of the M5 and the M4/M5 interchange at Almondsbury. For a removal team, that means you're on a major road within minutes of loading up, without crawling through the city centre.
If you're moving to Filton from London, the Midlands, or Wales, the drop-off is clean — come off the M5, and you're in Filton. For moves heading out, the same logic applies: load up in the morning, hit the motorway, and you're making time before the traffic builds. Our free home survey covers the access at both ends so there are no surprises.
What the Properties Are Like
"Filton connects straight through to Horfield — it's suburban, it's practical, and the road access is good. It's part of that northern Bristol corridor where we rarely have access problems. The Brabazon development changes month to month, so we check the current state of the site before every move."
Filton has two distinct housing types: the established 1930s and post-war estates and the brand-new Brabazon development. They're meaningfully different jobs. The older homes have front gardens, some driveways, and enough road width for a Luton to sit comfortably while the crew works. The Brabazon new-builds have wider roads, allocated parking, and modern proportions designed with contemporary furniture in mind — but active construction zones can change the approach route at short notice.
The Filton Park semis are well-built family homes with slightly more generous hallways than the Victorian terraces you find in inner Bristol, staircases that accommodate standard furniture without tight manoeuvring, and overall proportions that make furniture handling easier. These are the kind of properties where the removal team isn't standing in the garden wondering how to explain that a corner unit won't fit through the door.
The important thing is knowing about any access challenges before the van arrives rather than discovering them on the day. A free home survey lets us assess the internal access, the street parking, and any items that need special handling — and price accordingly.
Is Filton a Difficult Place to Move?
No. Filton is one of the easiest parts of Bristol for removals. No Residents' Parking Zone. No conservation area. Flat terrain, wide roads, and more driveways than you'll find anywhere in the inner city. You won't encounter the tight Victorian terrace streets, steep hills, or permit zone complications common in areas like Clifton or Montpelier. The only variable is whether you're in an established property or a new-build — and we plan for both.
For most Filton moves — a two or three-bed semi or new-build moving locally — you're looking at a team of two to three, one van, and a half-day to full-day job. Our free home survey covers the access, the parking, and the right crew size. If you need packing, we can send a team the day before to make the moving-day turnaround faster.
Planning Your Filton Move: A Quick Checklist
Before you confirm your removal booking, run through these:
- Established or new-build? Filton Park semis and Brabazon new-builds are meaningfully different jobs — flag which you have at booking so we bring the right protective materials.
- Brabazon phase? If you're moving into the development, confirm which phase and plot number. Construction zones shift regularly and we check the current routing before every move.
- Corporate relocation timeline? If your move is employer-coordinated, share the relocation coordinator's details early — we align our schedule with theirs.
- A38 timing? Rush-hour congestion on the A38 and around Filton roundabout can add time. We schedule arrivals to avoid the worst of it.
- Large items in older properties? The pre-war houses occasionally have tighter side access. Flag oversized furniture at booking so we assess the approach.
