Removals Bristol to London — 120 Miles, 1–2 Days
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
Bristol to London is our most popular long-distance route. The M4 runs directly between the two cities — 120 miles, roughly two hours in clear traffic. Whether your move takes one day or two depends on two things: how much you have to move, and where in London you're going. West London — good motorway access, predictable unload — can often be completed in a single day. Central or east London tends to push things to two days, partly because of drive time and partly because London properties add access and parking time that local moves don't require.
London presents challenges unique to the capital: parking suspensions that need to be applied for weeks in advance, congestion zones, narrow Victorian terraces with tight staircases, and mansion blocks with service lifts that need booking. Our crews handle Westminster, Camden, Islington, Hackney, and South London regularly. Telling us the postcode rather than "London" lets us give you a much more accurate picture — the side of London affects everything.
What Makes a Bristol to London Move Different?
The Friday Problem
Do not move on a Friday if you can possibly avoid it. London traffic on a Friday is reliably difficult — the Friday before school holidays or Easter is in a different category entirely. We have seen a three-hour Bristol-to-London drive turn into five and a half hours on a Friday afternoon. The result: the team arrives exhausted, unloads in the dark, and the customer pays for overtime nobody wanted.
The best days are Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. A one-day shift from Friday to Thursday can save you a couple of hundred pounds and a significant amount of stress. We always flag this when you book — the day you choose affects the entire experience.
Where in London You're Going
West London — Hammersmith, Chiswick, Putney, Richmond — is the natural run-in from the M4 corridor. Good motorway connections, less city driving, and the most predictable drive times. Central and east London add 45 minutes to an hour once off the motorway. South London means routing around or through the city.
A ground-floor maisonette with a parking bay outside is a different job from a fourth-floor flat in a building where the lift is restricted during move-in and the nearest parking is 80 metres along a corridor. Both are London. The postcode tells us which one we're dealing with.
Parking Suspensions and Access
If your London property is in a Controlled Parking Zone — most of inner London — you'll need a parking suspension to guarantee a bay outside your front door. We handle this for you, applying to the borough council at least two weeks ahead. Without it, circling for parking with a loaded removal van is a recipe for delays.
For larger households — 4+ bedrooms — we send two vans with a crew of four. This means fewer trips up narrow staircases and a faster unload at the London end. Our packing service is popular on this route: we pack the day before at your Bristol address, then move everything the following day.

We run Bristol to London multiple times a month — it's our busiest long-distance corridor. The patterns repeat: the M4/M25 junction delays at predictable times, the parking suspension requirements in every inner borough, and the difference that choosing the right day of the week makes to the entire experience. Painless Removals has been running this route since 1978.
"Where in London you're going matters as much as how much you've got to move. West London is the most predictable for us — good motorway connections, less city driving. Central London adds parking complexity and time. East London means navigating through the city itself. And whatever you do, avoid Friday — we've seen a three-hour drive turn into five and a half hours. A one-day shift to Thursday can save you a couple of hundred pounds." — Jay Newton, Director
If you're moving from London to Bristol, the same advice applies in reverse. We handle both directions with equal frequency — particularly professionals and families moving out of the capital for more space.
What Does a Bristol to London Move Cost?
A Bristol-to-London move typically falls between £1,200 and £2,500 depending on the size of your household, access at both ends, and whether you need packing. A one-bedroom flat with good access sits at the lower end — from around £800. A four-bedroom family home with a garage clearance, full packing, and difficult London access can reach £2,500–£4,000.
Our quotes include £15,000 insurance cover per van, all fuel, parking suspension handling, and a full crew. No hidden charges for mileage, tolls, or congestion zones. What we quote is what you pay.
Planning Your Bristol to London Move
- Avoid Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday are reliably better — cheaper, calmer, and faster.
- Give us the postcode. "London" isn't specific enough. West London, central London, and east London are different jobs with different pricing.
- Book 4–6 weeks ahead. This gives time for parking suspensions, packing logistics, and crew allocation.
- Consider the Key Wait Waiver. If you're in a chain, this fixed addition removes all overtime charges for key delays — peace of mind for a common problem.
- Professional packing? For long-distance moves, professional packing protects your belongings and your insurance cover. Self-packed items are not insured.
