Removals Bristol to Birmingham — 90 Miles, One Day
By Jay Newton, Director · Updated February 2026
The drive is manageable. The city at the other end is not always. Bristol to Birmingham is around 90 miles up the M5 — about two hours on a clear run, no tolls for the motorway itself. For smaller moves, that leaves enough room to load, drive, unload, and return in a single day. For larger moves — three or more vans' worth — splitting into two days is the safer, more practical approach.
Birmingham's housing stock is varied: inner-city terraces in the Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth, high-rise apartments near New Street Station with pre-booked goods lifts and restricted removal hours, suburban semis in Edgbaston and Moseley, and spacious detached properties in Harborne and Sutton Coldfield. Turning up on move day and hoping to find somewhere to park a Luton van outside a city centre apartment block is not a strategy — we plan every Birmingham delivery in advance.
What Makes a Bristol to Birmingham Move Different?
The M5/M42 Interchange
The M5/M6/M42 interchange south of Birmingham — known to locals as Spaghetti Junction — is notorious for incidents, roadworks, and unpredictable delays. A broken-down lorry or contraflow can add 45 minutes. We build this into our timing, scheduling departures to hit the interchange outside peak hours. The Friday before any school holiday is particularly bad — the corridor carries all the Devon and Cornwall traffic as well as local commuters.
Midweek moves are consistently smoother. A one-day shift from Friday to Thursday can save you time and stress. We always flag this when you book — the day you choose affects the entire experience.
City Centre Access
Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers much of the city centre inside the A4540 ring road. Our vehicles are fully compliant — no charge, no disruption to your move. But access to city centre apartments is a different matter. Canal-side developments in Brindleyplace, converted warehouses in Digbeth, and high-rises near the Jewellery Quarter often require pre-booked goods lifts, restricted removal hours, and reserved loading docks.
If your new property is in a permit parking area — common in Edgbaston, Moseley, and the Jewellery Quarter — we'll advise on whether you need a temporary parking suspension from Birmingham City Council. We handle the paperwork for you.
The Wider West Midlands
We also cover the wider West Midlands from this route: Solihull, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Castle Bromwich, and Walsall are all accessible via the M5/M6 corridor. Harborne and Edgbaston on the suburban fringe tend to be easier — wider streets, driveways, and more room to work. Each destination gets its own access assessment.
★★★★★“Our completion was delayed multiple times and with each change, Jay was extremely accommodating. On the move day, the three gentlemen were great — on time, friendly and efficient. Would highly recommend.”

Painless Removals treats Birmingham a bit like London — shorter drive, but the same principles apply for city centre access, parking, and traffic. The M5 route is toll-free and reliable for the bulk of the journey. The challenge is at the Birmingham end, particularly for city centre apartments where loading dock bookings and goods lift schedules dictate the timetable.
"We treat Birmingham a bit like London — shorter drive, but the same principles apply for city centre access, parking, and traffic. Avoid a bank holiday Friday if you can — the M5 and M42 around Birmingham carry all the Devon and Cornwall holiday traffic as well as the local commuters, and it can turn a two-hour drive into something much longer. Midweek, outside school holidays, it's a completely different journey." — Jay Newton, Director
This route is popular in both directions. Midlands professionals moving to Bristol for work, and Bristol families relocating to Birmingham for affordability or family reasons. If your completion dates don't match, we offer flexible storage at our Bristol depot until your new place is ready.
What Does a Bristol to Birmingham Move Cost?
A one- or two-bed flat with a single van typically costs £600–£900. A standard family home with two to three van loads runs £1,000–£1,500. City centre Birmingham with access complications — goods lift bookings, loading dock reservations, restricted hours — sits at the higher end. Our packing service adds to the cost but splits the work across two days.
Every quote includes £15,000 insurance cover per van, all fuel, crew, and equipment. No hidden charges for mileage, Clean Air Zone access, or parking suspension handling. What we quote is what you pay.
