What Affects the Cost of Your Removal?

No two moves are the same. Here are the six main factors that determine what you will pay.

1

Volume of Belongings

The single biggest factor. A 3-bed house with a full loft, packed garage, and garden shed costs more to move than the same house with minimal possessions. We measure volume in cubic feet during our survey — not by bedroom count alone.

2

Distance

A move within Bristol (say Clifton to Bedminster) costs less than a move from Bristol to Bath, and considerably less than Bristol to London. Local moves are charged as a day rate; long-distance moves factor in fuel, travel time, and motorway tolls.

3

Access Difficulties

Narrow streets, no parking outside the property, high floors without a lift, tight staircases — these all add time. A flat on the third floor of a Victorian conversion in Montpelier takes longer to load than a ground-floor new-build in Bradley Stoke. If we need a parking suspension from the council, that is an additional cost (around £45 in Bristol).

4

Packing Requirements

If you pack everything yourself, the cost is lower. If you need our team to pack fragile items only, there is a modest add-on. A full packing service — where we pack the entire house the day before — adds more but saves you days of work. See our packing service for details.

5

Time of Year

Summer (June to August) and end-of-month Fridays are the busiest times for removal companies across Bristol. Demand is higher, and so are prices. If you have flexibility, mid-week moves in autumn or winter are often cheaper and easier to schedule.

6

Special Items

Pianos, antiques, hot tubs, safes, grandfather clocks, gym equipment, and artwork all require specialist handling, extra crew members, or specific equipment. These items need to be flagged during the survey so we can price accurately and bring the right kit on the day.

What’s Included in Our Price

When we quote you a price, it covers everything you need for a professional move. There are no hidden extras and no last-minute surcharges.

  • Dedicated Move Manager who plans your move and oversees the day
  • Experienced, uniformed removal crew (not agency staff)
  • Fully equipped removal van (or vans) with ramps, trolleys, and straps
  • Quilted furniture blankets to protect every piece during transit
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly — beds, wardrobes, tables
  • £15,000 Goods in Transit insurance per van
  • All fuel costs included in your quote
  • No hidden charges, no surcharges, no "oh we didn't realise" extras

Optional add-ons — packing service and storage — are priced separately and always discussed during the survey. Nothing is ever added without your agreement.

Our philosophy: We would rather lose a job by being honest about the price than win it with a low quote that doubles on moving day. We have been in business since 1978 because customers trust us to do what we say we will do.

How to Get an Accurate Removal Quote

Online calculators and phone estimates are just guesses. Here is how to get a price you can actually plan around.

Record a quick video walkthrough of your home on your phone, or book a free in-person visit from your Move Manager. Takes 5–10 minutes either way.

2

We Assess Your Move

Our team reviews the volume of your belongings, checks access at both properties, notes any special items, and calculates exactly what is needed.

3

Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

Not every removal company is upfront about pricing. Here are the most common extras that other companies slip in after you have booked.

Stair surcharges

Some companies quote a ground-floor rate, then add £50–£100 per flight of stairs on the day. We assess this during the survey and include it in the quote.

Fuel surcharges

A "base price" that does not include fuel is not a real price. All our quotes include fuel costs.

Insurance exclusions

The cheapest quote often comes with minimal insurance or none at all. We include £15,000 Goods in Transit insurance per van as standard — items we have surveyed are fully covered.

Overtime charges

If a company underestimates the job because they did not survey properly, the move takes longer than quoted — and you pay the difference. Our surveys are thorough precisely to avoid this.

Furniture disassembly/reassembly

Some companies charge extra for taking apart and rebuilding beds, wardrobes, and tables. Ours is included as standard because it is a normal part of every move.

Painless Removals have been brilliant, couldn't recommend them more. They helped us move in Bristol and then helped us organise a cross-country move. Both were done on a tight timeline and at a good price. The guys who moved us were very kind and efficient – Thanks again!

How to Compare Removal Quotes

Getting three quotes is standard advice. But make sure you are comparing like for like.

Questions to Ask Every Company

  • Did you survey my home, or is this a phone estimate?
  • What insurance is included and what does it cover?
  • Is furniture disassembly/reassembly included?
  • Are there any surcharges for stairs, distance, or overtime?
  • Are your crew employed or agency staff?
  • Is fuel included in the price?

Red Flags to Watch For

  • A fixed price given over the phone without any survey
  • No written quote — just a verbal agreement
  • Vague language about insurance ("we’re covered" without specifics)
  • No online reviews or reviews only on their own website
  • Pressure to book immediately with a "today only" discount
  • A quote that seems significantly cheaper than every other company

Frequently Asked Questions About Removal Costs

Why do removal company prices vary so much in Bristol? +
Because every move is different. A 3-bed house with a full loft, double garage, and a piano on the second floor is a completely different job to a 3-bed house with minimal furniture. Prices also vary based on access — a Victorian terrace in Montpelier with no parking is harder to move than a new-build with a driveway. Legitimate companies will always want to survey your home before quoting. If a company gives you a fixed price over the phone without seeing your belongings, be cautious — that price is likely to change on the day.
Is it cheaper to move mid-week? +
Usually, yes. Friday is the most popular completion day, and weekends are in high demand too. Tuesday to Thursday moves are often easier to schedule and can be slightly cheaper. Similarly, moving outside of peak season (September to February) may reduce costs because demand is lower. If you have any flexibility on dates, it is worth asking your removal company what their quieter days look like.
What is included in a standard removal quote? +
Our standard quote includes your dedicated Move Manager, a team of experienced movers, a fully equipped removal van (or vans), quilted blankets for furniture protection, furniture disassembly and reassembly, straps and trolleys, fuel, and £15,000 Goods in Transit insurance per van. Packing and storage are available as add-ons if needed. We never add hidden charges — the price you are quoted is the price you pay.
Should I choose the cheapest removal company? +
Not necessarily. The cheapest quote often means fewer crew members (so the move takes longer), no proper insurance, no furniture protection, and sometimes agency staff who have never worked together before. Ask what is included: Does the price cover insurance? Furniture blankets? Disassembly and reassembly? Fuel? A surprisingly low quote usually means something has been left out — and you will pay for it on the day as an "extra".
Do you charge extra for stairs, parking, or difficult access? +
No — but only because we assess these factors during the survey and build them into your quote upfront. If your property has steep stairs, no nearby parking, or tight doorways, we account for the extra time and equipment needed before giving you a price. That way there are no surprises. Companies that do not survey your home are the ones most likely to add access surcharges on moving day.
How accurate are online removal cost calculators? +
They give you a rough idea, but that is all. Online calculators cannot see your loft full of boxes, your narrow staircase, or the fact that your street has permit parking. They also cannot assess special items like a piano or antique furniture. For an accurate quote, you need a proper survey — either a quick video walkthrough on your phone or an in-person visit from your Move Manager. Ours is completely free.
Can I reduce the cost of my removal? +
Yes. The most effective way is to declutter before the survey — everything you do not move, you do not pay to move. Packing yourself rather than using our packing service also reduces the cost, though it adds days of work. Moving mid-week or outside peak season helps too. And be honest during the survey about what needs moving — a forgotten garage full of boxes on the day will cost more than one that was included in the original quote.
Do I need to pay a deposit to book? +
Yes, we ask for a 30% deposit to secure your moving date. The remaining 70% is due on the day of the move. This is standard practice for reputable removal companies and guarantees that your preferred date is reserved with the right size team and number of vans.
