Got Questions About Moving?
We've Got Answers.
Before You Move
How far ahead do I need to book a removal company?
During busy periods like school holidays and end-of-month completions, good removal companies fill up fast. If you are flexible on dates, we can sometimes fit you in with just a few days' notice. See our full home removals page for more on how the booking process works.
This is my first house move — where do I even start?
Here's a rough timeline: 6 weeks out, book your removal and start decluttering. 3 weeks out, begin packing room by room, starting with things you don't use daily. 1 week out, confirm your date, redirect your post, and pack an essentials box (kettle, chargers, toilet roll, meds). On the day, just be there to let us in and tell us where things go. Our free packing guide walks you through every step, room by room.
What's the difference between you and a man-with-a-van?
We bring floor runners, mattress covers, sofa bags, wardrobe boxes, and TV cartons as standard. We disassemble and reassemble furniture. Every move is planned by a Move Manager who knows your property, your route, and your belongings. We are Move Assured accredited and have been operating in Bristol since 1978. A man-and-van can be fine for a few boxes — but for a full house move, the risk of damage and stress is significantly higher.
Do I need to do anything before you arrive?
Clear pathways through the house so the team can move freely. If you live on a street with limited parking, try to reserve a space outside your front door (a cone or a polite note to neighbours works well). Label each room at the new property so the team knows where to put things. Disconnect appliances like your fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before. And pack an essentials box you keep with you in the car — not on the van.
Can I just call and get a rough idea of cost?
For an accurate, fixed-price quote, we recommend our free home survey — either a quick video self-survey from your phone or an in-person visit. It takes 10–15 minutes and there's no obligation.
I'm in a chain — can you work around my completion date?
We allocate a full day to your move with no other jobs scheduled, so you won't be rushed if solicitors are slow with keys. Our team arrives at your current property and starts loading while you wait for confirmation on the new place. If the chain collapses on the day, we can arrange temporary storage for your belongings so you're not left stranded. We've been navigating Bristol property chains since 1978.
What if I need to change my moving date last minute?
We understand dates shift — especially with property chains. If your original date has already been taken by another customer, we'll offer you the next available slot. There's no penalty for rescheduling, and your deposit transfers to the new date.
Do you move people at weekends or bank holidays?
Saturday moves are popular and book up quickly, so we recommend securing your date as early as possible. Weekend and bank holiday moves may carry a small supplement to cover additional staffing costs. Our office is open Monday to Friday 9am–5pm, but the moves themselves can happen outside those hours. Call us on 0117 287 0082 to check availability.
Pricing & Paying
How much does it actually cost to move a 3-bed house in Bristol?
Every home is different, so we provide a fixed-price quote after a free home survey. The quote includes everything: loading, transport, unloading, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and floor protection. See our home removals page for full pricing details.
Are there any hidden fees I should know about?
Your quote covers the team, the vans, all equipment (blankets, straps, floor runners), and a full working day up to 5pm. The only scenario where additional charges can apply is if your keys arrive after 2pm on a chain move — and even then, we only charge for the extra wage time at a fair rate per person per half hour. No fuel surcharges, no stair charges, no hidden extras.
How do I pay — and when's the balance due?
Painless Removals accepts bank transfer, debit card, and credit card. Your quote is confirmed in writing so you know the exact total before you commit. We don't accept cash for the balance — everything goes through proper channels for your protection and ours.
Is it cheaper to book packing and removals together?
When you combine both, the same team handles packing day and moving day. They already know your property, your belongings, and any tricky access points — which makes moving day faster and smoother. A combined 3-bedroom removal and packing service typically costs £1,400–£2,200 depending on volume and distance.
What if the move takes longer than expected — do I pay more?
In practice, most moves finish well within the day. We plan carefully during the home survey to make sure the team size and van count matches your move. Overruns are rare — but if they happen, you'll only pay for the extra time at a transparent hourly rate. No surprises.
Do I need to tip the movers?
Our team are paid a fair wage by Painless Removals. If you feel the team have done a great job and want to show your appreciation, a tip of £10–£20 per person is generous. But the thing our lads appreciate most is a steady supply of tea (milk, two sugars seems to be universal) and being offered the use of the loo. A 5-star Google review afterwards means a lot to them too.
Is the quote actually free? No obligation?
You can get a quote via our free home survey — either a quick video self-survey from your phone or an in-person visit from your Move Manager. Both take 10–15 minutes. You'll receive a detailed, written quote you can compare with other companies.
Moving Day
What time will your team turn up?
Your Move Manager confirms the exact time the day before. For long-distance moves, we may suggest an earlier start to give the team enough time. For chain moves, we arrive at the agreed time and start loading while you wait for keys.
What actually happens on the day — step by step?
Here's the full rundown: The team arrives and does a walkthrough with you to note any special items. They lay floor runners and door protectors, then start loading room by room — heavy furniture first, boxes on top. Once the old place is empty, you do a final check together. The team takes a short break, then heads to your new home. At the new property, they unload and place everything where you direct them. Before leaving, they check you're happy with everything.
Do I need to be there the whole time?
At the old property, you can nip out for essentials once loading is underway. But at the new place, it really helps if you're there to say "sofa here, bed there, boxes in bedroom 2." Without direction, the team will make sensible guesses — but it's much easier to get things right first time while the team is there. If you absolutely can't be present, you can ask someone you trust to stand in.
What if it rains on moving day?
We protect your belongings with padded blankets and plastic sheeting during loading and unloading. Your carpets and floors are covered with protective runners to prevent muddy footprints. Mattresses and sofas go into waterproof covers. We move in all weather conditions except genuinely dangerous storms. Don't worry about the rain — we've got it covered (literally).
What if my keys are late and we can't get into the new place?
We typically expect keys by 1–2pm. If they arrive later, there's a small additional charge from 2pm onwards — but it's calculated fairly, per person per half hour. Read the full details on our home removals page.
Where do your guys park — what if there's no space?
For most Bristol streets, we can park directly outside. On narrower roads (hello, Clifton and Montpelier), we may need to use traffic cones or arrange a temporary parking suspension with the council. If there's a residents' parking zone, let us know and we'll advise on whether you need to arrange a visitor permit or waiver. We've moved people from every corner of Bristol — we know which streets are tricky.
Do I need to provide tea and snacks for the team?
If the kettle's accessible, the offer of a brew goes a long way. Milk, two sugars is the universal default. The team will bring their own lunch and take a short break (usually 20–30 minutes). You don't need to cater for them. But we won't say no to biscuits.
Can my kids be around during the move?
Moving day involves open front doors, heavy furniture going through hallways, and team members moving quickly. Young children are safest in a room that's already been cleared, with a responsible adult keeping an eye on them. Older kids can help by labelling boxes or directing the team at the new house. If you can arrange for younger ones to spend the morning with grandparents or friends, it'll reduce your stress too.
Moving with toddlers brings extra challenges — from explaining the move in terms they understand to keeping bedtime routine consistent during the upheaval. We've put together a dedicated guide to moving house with children with practical tips for before, during, and after the move.
Will you put the furniture exactly where I want it?
That's why we recommend being at the new property — so you can direct traffic as things come off the van. "Sofa against that wall, dining table by the window, wardrobe in bedroom 2." We'll keep moving things until you're happy. No extra charge for rearranging while we're there.
What if I change my mind about where something goes?
It's completely normal to change your mind once you see how things look in the new space. While the Painless Removals team is still on site, they'll happily shuffle things around — that's part of the service. Once the team has left, moving heavy furniture on your own is much harder, so make the most of them while they're there.
Packing & Prep
Is it okay if I haven't finished packing when you arrive?
If you're still packing when we arrive, the team will pitch in and help finish. However, this eats into the time allocated for the actual move, which could mean a later finish. To avoid this, aim to have everything boxed up and sealed the night before. Our packing guide has a room-by-room timeline. Or, if the thought of packing fills you with dread, our packing team can do the whole lot the day before.
Do I need to take apart the beds myself?
Our team carry the right tools and know how most bed frames go together. Strip the bedding and have your bed linen packed or in your essentials bag — the team handles everything else. If you have an unusual bed frame (like a custom-built cabin bed or a hydraulic ottoman), mention it during the home survey so we can plan accordingly.
Can I leave clothes in the drawers?
Our team will assess each piece of furniture on the day. If the drawers can be removed easily and the unit is sturdy, lightweight contents can stay. If the drawers don't come out, or the unit is wobbly, we'll ask you to empty them. The golden rule: if a drawer makes the furniture too heavy for two people to lift safely, it needs emptying.
What about stuff on the walls — pictures, mirrors, curtain rails?
We carefully remove framed artwork and mirrors, wrap them in padded blankets, and transport them in specialist picture cartons. Curtain poles, blinds, and wall-mounted shelving should be taken down before moving day — most people forget this until the last minute. If you need help, mention it during the survey and we can factor it into the plan.
Can I pack a suitcase and leave the rest to you?
Our packing team arrives the day before your move and packs your entire house, room by room, using professional-grade materials. All you need is a suitcase with a few days' essentials. It's the stress-free option and popular with busy families and professionals.
I've got loads of books — is that going to be a problem?
The biggest packing mistake Painless Removals sees is people filling large boxes with books. A large box of books can weigh 30kg+ and is dangerous to lift. Use small boxes (what the trade calls "book boxes") and fill them only two-thirds full. Mix in some lighter items on top if there's space. Our packing guide covers this in detail.
What do I do with half-empty bottles and cleaning products?
Use cling film or tape around lids to prevent leaks. Put bottles in a plastic bag inside the box as a secondary layer of protection. Don't mix cleaning chemicals together (bleach and ammonia is a bad combination). The Painless Removals team will handle these boxes carefully — but the safer you pack them, the better.
How many boxes will I need for a 3-bed house?
As a rough guide: 20–30 medium boxes, 10–15 small boxes (for books and heavy items), 5–10 large boxes (for bedding and light bulky things), and a handful of wardrobe boxes. Our packing guide has a full checklist. We can also supply and deliver all packing materials to your door — just speak to your Move Manager.
Tricky Items
Can you move a piano?
Piano moves require specialist equipment — we use piano skids, heavy-duty straps, and padded covers. Grand pianos are transported on their side with the legs removed. Mention the piano during your home survey so we can bring the right team and equipment. Piano moves are covered by our £15,000 Goods in Transit insurance.
My sofa barely got in — how are you going to get it out?
Our team knows every angle trick in the book — tipping, rotating, removing feet and doors where needed. In rare cases, sofas can go out through a window or over a balcony using our equipment. If we spot a potential problem during the home survey, we'll discuss options with you in advance. We haven't been beaten by a sofa yet.
Can you get stuff up narrow stairs with no lift?
Victorian terraces, maisonettes, flats above shops — we move people in and out of all of them. Narrow staircases are factored into the quote and the team size. We use stair-climbing techniques and specialist straps for heavy items like safes and appliances. If your property has particularly challenging access (like a spiral staircase or a 4th-floor flat with no lift), let us know during the survey so we plan the right team.
What about plants? I've got about 30.
Plants travel best on the day in open-topped boxes or crates, standing upright. Water them a day or two before (not on the morning of the move — soggy soil is heavy and messy). We'll load them last and unload them first. For a local Bristol move, your plants will be fine. For a long-distance move, wrap pots in plastic bags to contain any spills and keep them in a well-ventilated spot on the van.
Will you disconnect and reconnect my washing machine?
Our team will safely disconnect and move your washing machine, dishwasher, and tumble dryer. For reconnection, plumbing connections (especially for washing machines) should be done by a professional to avoid leaks and warranty issues. Freestanding cookers can usually be reconnected by the team, but gas appliances must always be done by a Gas Safe engineer.
Can you move stuff from the loft?
Loft clearances are common and completely fine. The key thing is to tell us how much is up there and whether there's a proper loft hatch and ladder or just a ceiling opening. If the loft is packed full, we'll need extra time and possibly an extra team member. Don't try to bring heavy things down yourself before we arrive — that's our job.
Do you move bikes, gym equipment, or trampolines?
Trampolines and large gym machines are disassembled by our team and reassembled at the new property. Bikes go in padded blankets to protect frames and wheels. Peloton-style bikes are moved as single units with screens covered. Mention everything during the survey — especially anything in the garage or garden that might be forgotten.
What about my fish tank?
Fish tanks need to be drained completely — we can't carry them with water in. Bag your fish in oxygen bags from a local aquarium shop, and transport them in your own car (not on the van) so you can keep an eye on temperature. Remove all gravel and decorations — they'll smash the glass if they shift during transit. Set up the tank at the new place as soon as possible. Let us know the tank size during the survey so we can plan.
Can you move a garden shed?
If you want to take your shed with you, you'll need to dismantle it before moving day (or hire a handyman). We're happy to load the panels and transport them. We can also arrange a house clearance if you'd rather clear the shed out entirely and start fresh at the new place.
Insurance & What If
What if something gets broken or scratched?
We take enormous care, but accidents can happen. If anything is damaged, photograph it and let us know. Claims are handled directly by Painless Removals — no third-party insurance companies, no runaround. Items packed by our professional team are automatically covered. Self-packed boxes are not (because we can't verify how they were packed). For that reason alone, our packing service is worth considering for valuable items.
Are my own packed boxes covered by your insurance?
This is the single biggest reason customers choose our professional packing service. When our team packs your belongings, we take responsibility for the contents. When you pack yourself, we can't verify that items were packed safely — so we can't insure them. If you have fragile or high-value items, even a partial packing service for just those items gives you peace of mind.
What if you scratch my floors or damage the walls?
We lay protective runners on all floors before we start moving anything. Door frames get padded protectors on both sides. We take "before" photos of any existing damage so there are no disputes. If something does get marked, tell the team on the day — most scuffs can be sorted immediately.
I've got a really expensive painting — what happens if it's damaged?
Our standard Goods in Transit policy covers up to £15,000 per van, but high-value individual items (artwork, antiques, jewellery, instruments) need to be declared in writing. Once declared, we can increase coverage through our insurer. We'll also use specialist packing — acid-free tissue, custom picture crates, and padded blankets — to give it the best possible protection.
How do I make a claim if something goes wrong?
Painless Removals manages all claims in-house. Photograph the damage, note which item and where it was in the van, and contact your Move Manager within 7 days. Most claims are resolved quickly. We've been in business since 1978 because we deal with problems honestly — not because we never have any.
What's the difference between your insurance and a man-and-van's?
Without Goods in Transit insurance, if your belongings are damaged during the move, you have no recourse. You'd need to make a claim on your own home contents insurance — if it even covers removals. With Painless Removals, you're covered from the moment we pick up your first box to the moment we place the last one. Being Move Assured accredited means we're held accountable by an independent body too.

My new place isn't ready yet — what do I do?
This is more common than you'd think — especially with chain moves where completion dates slip. We load your belongings onto the van, transport them to our secure storage facility, and keep them safe until your new property is ready. When the time comes, the same team delivers everything. You avoid paying for two separate collections.
Can I get to my stuff while it's in storage?
Our storage page has full details on access, security, and how to book a visit.
How much does storage cost if I'm already using you for the move?
Unit sizes and full pricing are on our storage service page. Starting from around £41 per month for a 25 sq ft unit, up to £157 per month for 200+ sq ft. The 50% discount applies to the first 2 months when combined with a removal booking.
Can you store just a few things — like one room's worth?
You don't need to fill a whole container. We'll help you choose the right size during your survey. See all unit sizes and pricing on our storage page.
What if I end up needing storage longer than I planned?
Life doesn't always go to plan — renovations overrun, chains collapse, plans change. You can keep your belongings in storage for as long as you need. Just let us know roughly when you'd like delivery, and we'll schedule it. There's no penalty for extending.
About Us
How long have you actually been doing this?
The company was founded by Steve, a Bristol musician who started moving his bandmates between gigs and flats. It's grown a bit since then. Today, Painless Removals is led by Director Jay Newton, who has personally overseen more than 2,000 completed moves. We're still based in Bristol, still independent, and still doing things properly.
Will I deal with the same person the whole way through?
One person who already knows your move, so you never have to repeat yourself. It's one of the main reasons our customers rate us 4.9 out of 5.
Who's Jay Newton?
Jay took over the running of Painless Removals and has maintained the company's reputation for personal, no-nonsense service. He still gets involved in complex moves and is available to speak to customers directly. You can reach Jay through our contact page or by calling 0117 287 0082.
Are your reviews real?
We don't buy reviews, incentivise them, or cherry-pick the good ones. After every move, we simply ask customers if they'd mind leaving honest feedback. The results speak for themselves. You can read them all on our reviews page or directly on our Google Business profile.
Do you do removals outside Bristol?
Bristol's location on the M4 and M5 corridors makes us well-placed for moves in any direction. The same dedicated team handles your entire move from start to finish — we never subcontract. Routes passing through or near Bristol are where we're most competitive on price, but we'll quote for any UK destination.
Do you cover Portishead, Clevedon, Bath, and Weston?
We serve Portishead, Clevedon, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Keynsham, Yate, Thornbury, Nailsea, Chepstow, and every neighbourhood in Bristol from Clifton to Fishponds. See our complete area coverage page for the full list.
What happens to all the cardboard and packing waste?
Once you've finished unpacking, give us a call and we'll arrange a convenient time to collect boxes, paper, and bubble wrap. We reuse sturdy boxes where possible and recycle the rest. We're working to reduce plastic packaging by switching to paper-based alternatives wherever they offer equivalent protection. If you packed yourself, we can still collect — just ask.
Why Bristol Trusts Painless Removals
Painless Removals were brilliant. They did what it says on the tin – made the whole process very painless. They were friendly and efficient and the whole process was completed super quickly. Would strongly recommend and will use them again. Thank you!
