Are you planning a move in 2023?
We know moving home is often top of the list for the most stressful life event. We totally get it, with the housing market as it has been for the last few years, just getting your offer accepted on a new home, or even on a rental, is enough to raise your blood pressure.
And that’s just the first hurdle! There are so many moving parts and things to consider, it can make your head hurt. We should never underestimate the magnitude of moving home. It’s your home, and with that comes many emotional connections. Then there is the practical element of it all, not only the process of purchase, but all the changes of addresses across everything! Then you have the physical side of it, decluttering, packing up and moving and unboxing at the other end.
We say some stress is a good thing – it’s what motivates us, makes us take action and gets things done. Yet there are some things you can do to make the process easier.
As a removals company, we come at the end of the process and clients are usually a mixture of exhausted and elated. We hear a lot of stories and have picked up a tip or two over the years.
So, here are 5 tips from us which can help make the process easier and less painless for you.
1. Do your research!
Not everything goes according to plan. The purchase of a new house alone could be a difficult and drawn-out process. So make sure you have trusted professionals supporting you along the way. From the estate agent to the mortgage advisor and solicitor, you want to know they are all doing their job properly and have your best interests at heart. Ask your friends and family for recommendations. Read reviews and ask questions. Pick people you like and can trust to work with you. Ensure they communicate effectively and get back to you when they say they will. Spending some time doing this research will go a long way to relieve some stress as it arises.
2. Manage your stress
It could get overwhelming at times. Trust that it will all turn out OK. Attend to what you need to attend to promptly and calmly. If you find yourself getting overly stressed, take action.
We say it’s never too early to begin clearing out your house. Physical work is great for stress relief, clear out the garage or a cupboard – if progress is slow in one area, at least you will feel you are making progress in another.
3. It’s never too early to start packing
Leading on from above, having a good clear out will make packing a lot easier when the time comes to move.
Get rid of what you don’t need, sell, donate to charity or give items away to friends. Be as ruthless as you can. This will save you time and energy on moving day and cost less in moving costs!
Start off with clearing one room and pack up items you know you won’t need for a while and store them in there.
4. Get organised
Start that check-list. We have one you can download here.
Think about who you need to inform about the move and your new address? Utility and communication providers? Schools and workplaces? Subscriptions? Banks?
Start the list early and add to it as you go along. And don’t forget to set up a reminder to redirect your post!
5. Stay positive!
Above all else keep a positive mindset! You would not believe the amount of people who have said, I knew it would turn out ok in the end. Getting overly stressed out will not move the process on any quicker – accept that it’s going to be stressful at times and go easy on yourself.
Do the things which help you destress and keep your mindset focussed on a positive outcome. Visualise yourself and your family in your new home and everything being perfect!
We hope these tips help you get through this period.
Moving day comes right at the end and we do our utmost to make this day as painless as possible.
